Ron is an Alberta-based environmental engineer and consultant who contributes his innate enthusiasm, organization, and leadership to energy and environmental projects that support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This focus began when Ron was an early-career professional who developed and implemented an energy company's program to address its environmental liabilities associated with contaminated land and groundwater. Ron enjoyed the transdisciplinary nature of this work and transitioned to environmental consulting with local, national, and global consultancies. As a consultant, he collaborated with diverse groups of professionals on sustainability assessments that focused on environmental remediation technologies and employed multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA). Ron's fascination with the interactions across the technical, economic, environmental, and social aspects of decision-making motivated him to complete M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in related areas, while working full-time.
Ron's experiences as a postdoctoral associate coalesced his focus on projects that supports the SDGs. First, he supported representatives and members of an Indigenous community in implementing its environmental monitoring program associated with oil sands mining. This humbling experience introduced Ron to the practical meaning of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, but there is still much to learn. Second, Ron taught graduate courses in science and engineering on sustainability: sustainable engineering, sustainable remediation, life cycle assessment, and life cycle sustainability assessment. Teaching these subjects was an opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to incorporate the SDGs into their professions—something many students valued.
Seizing an opportunity, Dr. Ron J. Thiessen is now an independent environmental engineer and consultant and offers his knowledge and experience to your team on a contract basis.
In a previous role, Ron was a Mitacs-funded postdoctoral associate who supported an Indigenous community with its environmental monitoring program. The community lives near oil sands mining operations and is concerned that the operations may be harming the rivers and lakes where they fish, hunt, and trap. The work focused on finding locations along the edge of a river where there was evidence that mining operations may be affecting these waterbodies. The unique part of the work was that Indigenous knowledge and natural science were combined in complementary and respectful ways.
